Howard Warren Almand, Jr. was born January 16, 1914 in Salisbury,
North Carolina. He moved from the Church Militant to the Church Triumphant on March 6, 1994.
The only son of Howard Warren Almand and Frances Joy was destined
under God not only to carry on the family name but to be a beautiful
proponent of his maternal heritage -joy.
Howard's father managed Coca Cola plants and moved the family to Georgia. It was in Georgia
at the age of twelve Howard first made his commitment to God and His church. While living in
Georgia he attended Gor~on Military School and later Tallahassee Community College and Florida
State University. Upon his father's untimely death his mother moved her family to Charleston to
be near her family. Howard grew up at Sullivan's Island and there married Hazel Lavinia Tripp on
Apnl30, 1936. They were blessed with three children, Howard Warren Almand, Ill, Marsha Erlene
Almand Williams and Walter Leslie Almand.
At the age of 47 Howard felt God's hand upon his life in an unusual way. It was then he became
a Lay Speaker. In God's providence an employment opportunity was the instrument for bringing
the Almand family to Tallahassee, Florida. At the altar in Bethel United Methodist Church, just two
years after being certified as a Lay Speaker, he answered the call to the ministry. Praise God,
Methodism in Florida has not been the same since.
Howard served appointments at Glen Julia Circuit; Chaires; Carrabelle; Lee; Associate, St.
Marks, St. Petersburg; Wakulla. All but one year of his ministry was spent in the Tallahassee
District.
A funeral service was conducted by his pastor and friend, the Reverend Louis E. Patmore. The
Rev. Howard Warren Almand, Jr., was laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery in Carrabelle. The
Carrabelle United Methodist Church was filled to overflowing as people from all over North Florida
came to pay tribute to the man of God of whom it was said, "When I think of Brother Howard Almand
I think of love."
